by David Lord
Compiled and Edited by Kathryn Ross
David Lord stood on the brink of an influential career as an informed and inspired naturalist, writer, and speaker. Though he loved soaking in the wonders of God in the marsh, sky, and shoreline, he contended with dark valleys of depression and doubt, unable to fully embrace his calling. He possessed a unique mind, sharp intellect, tender heart, and keen gift of insight. Perhaps too unique, sharp, tender, and keen—making life a battle to balance.

Tragically, on October 22, 2014, David lost his battle with the valley of depression.
He Wondered as He Wandered: Reflections on Birds, Butterflies, and Battles with Depression from a Marshland Naturalist, is a compilation of David’s writings originally published between 2011 and 2014 on his blog, I Wonder as I Wander. He reflects upon varied outings enjoyed while birding on land and river in Southern New Jersey, hiking trails, exploring the Pineland marshes, roaming out West, traveling in Europe, and getting up close and personal with butterflies. His ability to see the character of God in Creation and the peace and insight he discovered there, poured from his heart in short devotional thoughts of depth and intelligence.
“Any day afield with David was a refresher course into the wonders of the universe as seen through his discerning eyes and gilded by his unbridled enthusiasm.” Peter Dunne, Founder of the World Series of Birding
“Dave’s flame burned brightly, but far too briefly.” Pat Sutton, Author of Birds & Birding at Cape May
In publishing these inspired writings, David’s family hopes to give wings to the legacy he leaves behind: A guide to inform your spirit and imagination, drawing you nearer to God—wondering as you wander. Also included are:
Those who grieve in loss will be encouraged.
Those who battle as David did will find strength to embrace LIFE.
